Sophie LangdonSophie Langdon is one of Britain's leading violinists. She has appeared as soloist with many major orchestras: the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Philharmonia, BBC Symphony Orchestra, BBC National Orchestra of Wales, BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, BBC Philharmonic and the Berlin Radio Orchestra.

Recognised as a violinist and musician of great versatility, Sophie Langdon is active in many different spheres: as chamber player, soloist and recitalist, orchestral leader and director, and teacher. She is Head of Strings at Cranleigh School and Professor of Violin at the Royal Academy of Music.

Scholarship study took her to the Royal Academy of Music, the Juilliard School in New York, the Curtis Institute in Philadelphia, and the Guildhall School of Music where she collected many prizes, and in 1981 with the Trio Zingara she was a winner at the Munich International Competition.

Sophie Langdon is a familiar figure on London's concert platforms: she has appeared many times to critical acclaim at the Purcell Room and Queen Elizabeth Hall of the South Bank, the Wigmore Hall and St.John Smith's Square. In addition to her demanding activities as a soloist, Sophie also plays with various ensembles including Lontano, Jeux, Aquarius, Music Projects, the London Sinfonietta and her own string quartet - Fourth Dimension. She guest leads for the English Chamber Orchestra, the City of London Sinfonia, London Mozart Players, the Orchestra of St.John Smith's Square and the Academy of London. Leadership appointments include the London Chamber Symphony, and from 1992-96 the Ambache Chamber Orchestra with whom she led and directed regularly at the Queen Elizabeth Hall and St.John Smith's Square. In the autumn of 1994 she led the Academy of London in their historic China tour - this was the very first time a British orchestra had been invited by the Chinese. Her commitment to contemporary and twentieth century repertoire is considerable, and in 1993 she made her conducting debut with Webern's Five Pieces for orchestra with the Taunton Sinfonietta.

In addition to appearing regularly at Britain's festivals and all the major London venues, Sophie has appeared throughout Britain, Europe and North America and broadcasts frequently for the BBC, both live and in the studio. In March 1996 her Chandos recording of the Ethel Smyth concerto for Violin and Horn with the BBC Philharmonic was released to critical acclaim. Other recordings made in 1997 include a CD for IMP of Mozart piano and oboe quartets, and the nonet by Louise Ferrenc for Carlton Classics, both with the Ambache Chamber Ensemble.

In 2000 the Fourth Dimension debut CD of Goldmark was released on ASV, referred to by the Gramophone as "quartet playing of real distinction". Sophie Langdon's two volume recording of Spohr violin and harp music with harpist Hugh Webb has been released to critical acclaim on the Naxos label.
